GE Healthcare has released a new Silent Scan feature for its MRI systems.
Highlighted as a work-in-progress at the 2012 RSNA meeting, Silent Scan is designed to reduce acoustic noise generated during an MRI exam to the levels of background sound. Some MRI systems can produce sound at more than 110 decibels while scanning a patient.
The technology incorporates a new type of 3D MRI acquisition along with proprietary gradient and radiofrequency system electronics, lessening noise at the source, GE said.
Silent Scan is now available on GE's 1.5- and 3-tesla systems for routine head examinations.
