GE, NFL name Head Health Challenge winners

GE Healthcare in partnership with the National Football League (NFL) has chosen the first 16 winners of its Head Health Challenge from among 400 entries in 27 countries.

Launched in March 2013, the challenge is part of a four-year $60 million collaboration known as the Head Health Initiative between GE and the NFL to develop new technologies to better understand, diagnose, and prevent traumatic brain injury (TBI).

The winners include researchers who developed a blood test to measure brain injury and a new brain imaging technique that helps identify connections in the brain that are broken after TBI.

Winners will each receive a $300,000 reward, and GE and the NFL will provide mentorship and access to GE researchers and industry thought leaders for further development of their ideas. The winners will also advance to the next stage of the competition, in which six winners will receive an additional $500,000 in 2015.
