MRI scanner explodes at NJ animal hospital

Even MRI scanners at animal hospitals must be treated with great care, as a New Jersey animal hospital found out on March 6.

Several workers were taking apart an MRI scanner at the Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus, NJ, when it exploded, according to a report on NBC 4 TV in New York City. One worker was hospitalized in critical condition with lacerations and related injuries to his body, while two other workers have respiratory complaints and other minor injuries.

Authorities say there was a small helium leak, but there were no reports of a fire after the initial explosion. Hazardous materials crews responded to the scene as a precaution and assisted firefighters in stopping the leak.

According to the report, animal hospital owner Dr. Tony Palminteri said employees successfully evacuated the animals and none were injured. Pets in critical condition were taken to nearby animal facilities for continued treatment.
