Presenter Dr. Patrick Do and co-authors Dr. Jennifer Trinh Leung and Dr. Mahesh Patel set out to develop an interactive, Web-based reporting application that would educate residents on the new fifth edition of the BI-RADS Atlas, improve consistency and accuracy of breast lesion descriptions, and increase efficiency. Previously, report templates and descriptions for a breast mass, focus, and nonmass enhancement were in different Microsoft Word documents; the radiology report was generated in a Word document and then copied and pasted into the electronic reporting system, according to Trinh.
The Web application developed by the group features an intuitive graphical user interface and provides images that illustrate the key findings described in the BI-RADS lexicon, Trinh said.
"After selection of morphology and kinetics terms for each breast lesion, an appropriate structured report is generated and can be easily pasted into the electronic reporting system," she told AuntMinnie.com. "The application led to increased conformity with the new BI-RADS lexicon and improved knowledge of breast lesion morphology and enhancement terminology. It also improved efficiency with generating breast MRI reports."
