News from ECR 2017 | Creating a culture of safety | Breast MRI and mastectomy

VIENNA - The European Congress of Radiology (ECR) is in full swing, and we're pleased to bring you the latest news from this important meeting.

The ECR has historically been the most important radiology conference in Europe, but the organizer of the show, the European Society of Radiology (ESR), has set its sights higher. At the opening ceremony on March 1, ECR 2017 President Dr. Paul Parizel, PhD, pointed out that 50% of the group's membership comes from outside Europe, and the ESR's goal is to make ECR the pre-eminent international meeting as well.

It could be well on its way, judging by the quality of the clinical content in the scientific program this week. Our coverage leads off with a story on how radiology needs to do better to ensure a culture of patient safety -- read that story by clicking here.

Next is an article on breast MRI, based on a presentation by Italian researchers who found that the modality can help tailor surgical treatment and doesn't lead to more mastectomies.

Meanwhile, Spanish researchers have developed an automated software algorithm that can quantify lung emphysema on CT scans, while Australian researchers investigated the utility of CT angiography for postmortem imaging.
