ECR 2018 and the Beast from the East | Sessions on gadolinium | Videos and more

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

VIENNA - The European Congress of Radiology (ECR) kicked off yesterday under chilly weather as a Siberian cold front dubbed the "Beast from the East" grips Europe with a reminder that winter is not yet over.

Fortunately, the halls of the Austria Center Vienna are humming with activity. From last night's bravura opening ceremony featuring a musical tribute to the three guest countries (China, Switzerland, and Portugal) to the opening of the technical exhibition today, it's been a nonstop whirlwind of events.

And, as always, the clinical content at ECR does not disappoint. In a Wednesday talk, researchers from Austria and Switzerland presented their work on a question that vexes radiologists on both sides of the Atlantic: Should radiologists directly give patients the results of their imaging exams, and if so, how? Click here to read their recommendations.

Another common issue is gadolinium retention. A special focus session on Wednesday was dedicated to gadolinium deposition, while French researchers presented their protocol for how they achieved acceptable image quality for scans of patients with intralabyrinthine schwannoma -- without gadolinium contrast. And while we're on the topic of MRI, be sure to read this article on a protocol developed by German researchers that could make 10-minute abdominal MRI scans possible.

Philip Ward, editor in chief of our sister site, AuntMinnieEurope.com, has been busy interviewing European radiology luminaries on video about some of the most important topics facing the specialty. Click here for his chat with ECR 2018 President Dr. Bernd Hamm, or click here for an interview with Dr. Elisabetta Giannotti from Nottingham, U.K., about the future of mammography.
