Cancer death rates drop again | MRI scanning glove | AI and 3D printing

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

There's more good news in the war on cancer. A new U.S. government report has shown that cancer mortality continues to drop.

Cancer mortality in the U.S. fell at an average annual rate of 1.8% for men and 1.4% for women for the period starting in 1999. The decline mirrors trends in cancer mortality seen in other recent reports.

But there was a dark cloud behind the findings: The incidence of late-stage prostate cancer has been rising in recent years, indicating that perhaps the medical community was too hasty in dismissing screening based on prostate-specific antigen testing. Read more by clicking here.

MRI scanning glove

In our MRI Community, we bring you an article on a novel technology being developed at NYU Langone Health that consists of a glove embedded with MRI receiver coils that fits over a patient's hand.

Researchers had to overcome a number of challenges inherent in MRI instrumentation to create the glove, which enables the visualization of bones, ligaments, and tendons while patients move their hands. Find out how they did it by clicking here.

In other news in the community, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last week updated its medication guides for gadolinium-based contrast agents for MRI scanning. The move is part of the agency's effort to give more information to patients and healthcare providers about benefits and risks of the agents.

AI and 3D printing

Finally, visit our Advanced Visualization Community for a new article on how artificial intelligence (AI) could be used to speed up the 3D printing process by helping to preprocess images and performing tasks such as measuring structures and calculating volumes.
