Image analysis software developer Perspectum Diagnostics has launched a study to map how the COVID-19 affects the health of multiple organs, as well as to identify features on MRI that identify who is at risk of contracting the disease.
Over a period of 24 months, researchers in the CoverScan study will gather detailed multiparametric MRI and genetic studies to determine the prevalence and degree of lung, heart, kidney, liver, pancreas, and spleen injury in a cohort of over 500 patients recovering from the COVID-19 respiratory disease following infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The CoverScan study also will assess changes in the health of multiple organs and whether genetic traits influence recovery.
"Initial reports suggest that there is evidence of organ damage in those being discharged following severe COVID-19 disease," said Mary Xu, head of clinical affairs at Perspectum. "Through this study, we want to gain a better understanding of the impact of this disease by mapping the extent of organ health."
