AuntMinnie.com MRI Insider

Dear MRI Insider,

It's always a good thing when imaging can help clinicians more accurately characterize whether lesions are benign or malignant. Researchers from Cincinnati Medical Center in Ohio have found that using a particular radiomics measure with breast MRI can do just that.

In this edition's Insider Exclusive, we're highlighting results from a study published in the Journal of Breast Imaging that found that adding textural analysis to breast MRI improves the modality's ability to distinguish between malignant and benign axillary lymph nodes in women with breast cancer.

We're also covering the latest in the ongoing debate over the safety of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) that erupted last week in the Journal of the American College of Radiology. Should hospitals be using one type of GBCA over another in order to fend off the threat of lawsuits over gadolinium deposition disease? Needless to say, opinions differ.

MRI has played a key role in the understanding of COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, particularly when patients develop neurological symptoms. Find out what researchers have said about neurological manifestations of COVID-19 on MRI, and discover what another group has learned about a secondary, severe inflammatory brain illness that children are vulnerable to developing after they've been exposed to the virus.

On the breast cancer screening front, a team from the University of Chicago described the results from a study that found that using a deep-learning computer-aided diagnosis algorithm with multiparametric MRI improves the performance of radiologists in identifying breast cancer. And investigators from Boston Children's Hospital say that women who had childhood cancer treated with radiotherapy benefit from earlier breast cancer screening, specifically, annual MRI plus annual mammography starting at age 25.

Finally, discover why investigators from the Institute of Cancer Research in London say that a common MRI technique called T1 mapping could help clinicians evaluate the severity of neuroblastoma in children and the efficacy of treatment.

There's always something exciting happening in the world of MRI. Keep in close touch with AuntMinnie.com's MRI Community to get the latest news and research developments from around the globe.
