Researchers from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland have received a $1.15 million grant from the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) to develop artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for distinguishing between tumors and damaged noncancerous tissue on postoperative MRI exams in cancer patients.
The project, which is being led by Pallavi Tiwari, PhD, and Satish Viswanath, PhD, at Case's Center for Computational Imaging and Personal Diagnostics (CCIPD), will focus on brain and colorectal cancer and utilize radiomics. Other collaborators include the following: Dr. Manmeet Ahluwalia, a neuro-oncologist at the Cleveland Clinic; Dr. Sharon Stein, a colorectal surgeon at University Hospitals; Andrew Janowczyk, PhD, a research faculty member at the CCIPD, and Anant Madabhushi, PhD, director of the CCIPD.
The NCI grant also calls for the researchers to make their software tool available to other scientists, with an eye on future dissemination among clinicians, according to the university.
