GE Healthcare has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for Signa 7.0T, a 7-tesla MRI scanner designed for both research and clinical applications.
GE announced the scanner at the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) conference in August. The company said the system is designed to address limitations of current MRI systems by using ultrahigh-field magnet technology that offers five times more power than most scanners.
Signa 7.0T. Image courtesy of GE Healthcare.The company said that Signa 7.0T can image anatomy, function, metabolism, and microvasculature in the brain and joints with high resolution and detail, and it can support clinical applications from neurology to musculoskeletal imaging.
The scanner is based on GE's UltraG gradient technology, the firm's most powerful whole-body gradient coil, and it also features GE's latest SignaWorks software platform with clinical applications like AIR x brain for automated slice positioning and Silent MR imaging, which supports protocol translation between GE MR scanners.
