The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a $4 million grant to the City College of New York (CCNY) and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) to support the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in MRI for breast cancer screening.
Making use of 100,000 breast exams from MSK as well as data from Duke University and Johns Hopkins University, the five-year project will utilize deep-learning techniques to assess a woman's future breast cancer risk based on analysis of breast MRI and mammography exams, according to CCNY.
"We're hopeful the results from this study will enable us to take steps towards precision screening in the future where we can determine the required breast MRI screening interval for each individual at increased risk of breast cancer," said project co-leader Dr. Elizabeth Sutton of MSK in a statement.
Lucas Parra, PhD, of CCNY will be the other project co-leader.
