Photoelectron aims mini x-rays at breast cancer

Photoelectron, developer of a miniature x-ray system for tumor therapy, announced that it has begun breast cancer treatments with the system at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in New York City. The Lexington, MA-based Photoelectron said treatments of two patients involved intraoperative radiotherapy of the region surrounding the tumor as part of a procedure in which the tumor was removed surgically.

Radiotherapy was used along with surgery in order to reduce the likelihood of tumor recurrence, a technique that has been applied to a variety of other body sites, including colorectal and brain tumors, according to the company.
