Varian releases VariSeed 7.0 software

Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems has released a new version of its VariSeed brachytherapy treatment planning software. VariSeed 7.0, which received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance earlier this month, is being released at this week's American Association of Physicists in Medicine meeting in Salt Lake City.

VariSeed 7.0 provides the option of real-time intraoperative brachytherapy planning, allowing radiation oncologists to create a volume study, a proposed plan, and a completed post plan, all as part of the seed implant process, according to the Palo Alto, CA-based vendor.

With these new capabilities, clinicians can overlay preoperative plans onto a live ultrasound image, and adjust needles or seeds according to differences between the pre-operative plan and the actual implant. The dose distribution can also be displayed as it is evolving on the live ultrasound scan, according to Varian.

The new release also includes new image registration and fusion tools, as well as functional image-guided therapy capabilities. Varian has also incorporated what it calls a SeedFinder function, which automatically locates seeds in a CT data series.
