Cancer center fuses PET, CT images for radiotherapy

The Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRT) in San Antonio, TX, said it has successfully overlaid high-resolution PET images onto Marconi CT planning images for Nomos Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) treatment fields.

Medical physicists at the center have been working with CTI Pet Systems of Knoxville, TN, to develop the technology needed to fuse the images. The center's medical physics director, James Hevezi, Ph.D., said the technique enables radiotherapy-targeting of lesions that can be seen only on PET imaging. Research is also underway to explore the potential of targeting lesions with the Nomos Peacock Mimic system to cover the PET-visualized targets in 3-D, according to the center.

CPS is a joint venture between Siemens Medical Systems of Hoffman, IL, and CTI, which manufactures Ecat HR Plus PET scanner used to acquire the images.
