ARRT to investigate administrators' hiring decisions

In an effort to settle the controversial question of whether baccalaureate degrees should be required for certification of radiation therapy technologists, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is conducting a study to investigate the hiring decisions of radiation therapy administrators.

The St. Paul, MN-based ARRT has hired Personnel Decisions Research Institutes of Minneapolis to conduct the research as part four of a six-part study. Researchers will ask a representative sample of administrators to make hiring decisions for a sample of simulated job applicants. The administrators will be drawn from ARRT-registered directors of radiation therapy departments.

The simulations will consist of résumés and other application materials that vary systematically according to factors thought to influence administrators’ hiring decisions, the ARRT said. The final report on the six-part study will be presented at the June 2002 American Society of Radiologic Technologists conference.
