Radiation therapy provider Varian Medical Systems said that the number of cancer centers employing its SmartBeam intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) radiation therapy system more than doubled in 2001. As of the end of 2001, 92 centers were using SmartBeam IMRT, up from 40 in 2000, according to the Palo Alto, CA-based vendor.
