Varian Medical Systems has received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for a new version of its Helios intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatment planning software. The new version runs on the Palo Alto, CA-based firm's Eclipse platform, enabling deployment on Windows-based PCs, according to Varian.
With Helios 6.5, users can plan 3-D conformal radiation therapy, brachytherapy, and IMRT on the same workstation, Varian said. In other new features, Varian has incorporated automation of organ contouring and segmentation, as well as a template library of dose-volume constraints for cases that routinely require inverse treatment planning. Shipments of Helios 6.5 will begin in late July, according to Varian.
