Radiation therapy firm North American Scientific (NAS) reported that it plans to enter the developing market for breast brachytherapy through an initiative designed to improve on current accelerated partial-breast irradiation (APBI) treatment options.
NAS said it has filed for patent protection and is completing design of a multichannel catheter device that can be placed following surgery and prior to initiation of radiation treatment. The new device is designed to accommodate treatments at high-dose or low-dose rates, according to the Chatsworth, CA-based firm.
In addition, the company has submitted a 510(k) application to the Food and Drug Administration for a device that delivers a low-dose-rate treatment utilizing its Prospera brachytherapy seeds. The developer said it expects to file a second 510(k) application with the FDA to market a similar device for the high-dose-rate procedure.
NAS currently plans to launch its new APBI devices this November at the 2006 meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) conference in Philadelphia.
