Varian gets FDA nod for planning tool

Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for its Smart Segmentation tool.

Added to Varian's Eclipse treatment planning system, Smart Segmentation uses "intelligent" software to identify and outline organs and other structures within diagnostic images of the thorax and male pelvis, according to the Palo Alto, CA-based vendor. The tool can identify all structures of interest in less than 45 seconds, Varian said.
