ASTRO changes its name

The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) has changed its name to the American Society for Radiation Oncology.

The Fairfax, VA-based organization said it is making the change because the term "therapeutic radiology" has become outdated and confusing as radiation oncology has evolved into a specialty separate from its origins in diagnostic radiology.

The society will keep the acronym ASTRO by having the "T" in its new logo represent ASTRO's tagline, "Targeting Cancer Care." The name change is the fourth for the society since being founded in 1958.
