Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA, has introduced a new brachytherapy applicator set for increased treatment precision for patients with bronchial cancer.
The firm's centering intraluminal applicator set is available for use with Varian's GammaMed and VariSource brachytherapy afterloaders. Designed for treating the trachea, main bronchus, and esophagus, it features a three-centering catheter that allows users to place it in the lumen of the trachea or the bronchus and maintain a channel for air to pass.
It also uses a Seldinger guidewire technique to allow easy implant guidance, as well as a radiopaque x-ray marker line over the full length of the centering catheter and through the centering baskets that allows easy identification using either fluoroscopic or x-ray images, according to Varian.
