Brachytherapy firm Cianna Medical of Aliso Viejo, CA, touted positive clinical results from two studies that show that breast cancer radiation with the company's SAVI applicator works well for breast conservation therapy patients with small breasts, small tumor beds, and minimal distance between the lumpectomy cavity and skin surface.
The two studies were conducted at Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego. They will be presented at the upcoming American Brachytherapy Society annual meeting in Toronto.
The first study evaluated 13 breast cancer patients who chose breast conservation therapy. SAVI allowed for effective coverage of the breast cancer tumor bed while also sparing normal tissue from radiation. There were no infections, seromas, or local recurrences of cancer.
The second study reviewed early clinical experiences with SAVI in 40 breast cancer patients. Researchers concluded that the device allowed for greater flexibility in planning, easier insertion, and minimal radiation exposure to normal tissue, Cianna said.
