The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) of College Park, MD, and the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) of Fairfax, VA, are hosting a meeting in Miami, June 24-25, to address radiation safety in radiation oncology.
The first day of the meeting will include presentations on errors that can occur during radiation therapy, the roles of the radiation therapy team in delivering treatment, and what's currently being done to address patient safety. The second day will include a panel discussion on what vendors are doing to improve safety, and the meeting will conclude with a discussion of accreditation, regulation, and event reporting.
Program directors of the meeting are Michael Herman, Ph.D., of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and William Hendee, Ph.D., of the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Attendance will be limited to the first 325 registrants; more information is available by clicking here.
The meeting is occurring amid increased scrutiny of rising medical radiation dose in the U.S. and errors in both diagnostic and therapeutic radiation. Both the U.S. Congress and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have held hearings on medical radiation in recent months.
