Breast cancer treatment products developer Orbital Therapy of Bedford, MA, has been issued a U.S. patent for its self-shielded radiation therapy device, which does not require a traditional bunker, or vault, for operation.
Currently, radiation therapy machines are housed inside concrete or lead vaults to prevent radiation from escaping a treatment room. Orbital Therapy's approach integrates the shielding into the design of the machine to eliminate the need for a bunker.
The configuration also is designed to reduce installation costs, allow an operator to remain in the room with the patient, and protect the patient from unnecessary radiation to minimize the chances of long-term complications.
The company is using the shielding technology in a device to treat breast cancer patients with external-beam radiation.
