ASTRO ends accreditation partnership with ACR

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) has ended its radiation oncology practice accreditation affiliation with the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR stated that its radiation oncology accreditation program will remain unchanged.

In 2008, ASTRO entered into a memorandum of understanding with the ACR to modify an existing ACR program into one that would be jointly run by both organizations. An ASTRO spokesperson said that the organizations worked together over the past year to finalize a permanent partnership, but were unable to agree on a number of matters.

ASTRO will launch its own radiation oncology practice accreditation program in 2013. The program will integrate ASTRO's existing quality initiatives, including maintenance of certification and clinical guidelines. It will include extensive education programs as well, ASTRO said.
