Varian reports strong 4th quarter

Solid global demand for Varian Medical System's newer oncology and x-ray products helped boost the radiation therapy firm's bottom line in this year's fourth quarter (end-September 28) compared to the same quarter last year.

Revenues totaled $756 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2012, an increase of 5% compared to last year. Net earnings totaled $120.2 million in the fourth quarter, a 9% increase from the $100.7 million reported in the same quarter of 2011, according to the company.

For the year, Varian reported revenues of $2.807 billion, up 8% compared to revenues of $2.597 in 2011. Net earnings rose 9.7% to $427 million in 2012, from $399 million in 2011.

Varian said it continues to focus on innovation and expanding its global presence, while strengthening its software and service franchises and commercializing protons. A company-wide productivity initiative is also under way, according to the firm.
