Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems launched its new Edge radiosurgery suite for noninvasive procedures at this week's American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in Boston.
The fully integrated system for performing advanced radiotherapy procedures incorporates new tumor tracking technology and motion management capabilities, Varian said.
Edge combines a number of Varian technologies into a single package, according to the company. The Calypso motion management system uses optical surface monitoring for real-time tracking of tumor motion during treatment, while image guidance incorporates 2D, 3D, and 4D imaging, the latter showing motion over time.
The suite also includes support for both frame-based and frameless approaches to patient immobilization, in addition to the company's Eclipse treatment-planning software, with automated contouring tools and an anatomical atlas of templates for expediting the radiosurgery treatment-planning process. Finally, Varian's new PerfectPitch treatment couch gives physicians more options for accessing and treating disease sites by adjusting patient position.
The system was designed to deliver stereotactic radiosurgery to tumors of the lung, brain, spine, and other areas amenable to radiotherapy treatment.
