RT after mastectomy doesn't affect tissue expanders

New data published in Radiation Oncology show that a tissue expander can withstand radiation levels well above the maximum dose level typically used in postmastectomy radiation therapy (RT).

The study is being highlighted by AirXpanders, which has developed AeroForm, a technology for women who require tissue expansion for breast reconstruction following mastectomy.

The researchers found that AeroForm's electronics continued to function properly after exposure to radiation levels up to 75 Gy -- well above the maximum dose level of 50 Gy to 60 Gy. Also, the device did not impede the delivery of radiation doses, compared with patients who have intact breasts, AirXpanders said (Radiat Oncol, October 11, 2013).

The company's tissue-expansion products for breast reconstruction are not yet cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), according to the firm.
