The Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance (MITA) has approved a new data standard to enhance the safety and effectiveness of radiation therapy.
The RT-1 Gating Interface Standard will be used in radiation therapy to improve targeting accuracy and reduce normal tissue irradiation. The standard also provides technical information to developers for synchronizing radiation therapy equipment with the patient's breathing and other movements during cancer treatment.
If a patient's movement is outside of the standard's predetermined window, a signal will be triggered. The RT-1 standard defines specific technical fail-safe provisions used to interface devices from various manufacturers to accomplish this, MITA said. The standard provides clinicians with choices in the technology they can use to treat their patients with these advanced techniques in a safe and effective manner.
