Mevion touts 1st patients treated at private proton center

Four patients at a physician-owned Florida practice have received proton therapy with Mevion Medical Systems' S250 system, an event that Mevion claims is the first time patients have been treated with proton therapy in a private center, rather than in a hospital or university setting.

Ackerman Cancer Center in Jacksonville, FL, treated the patients on April 30. In the next week, eight more patients will begin proton therapy, Mevion said.

The center is the second facility to use Mevion S250. The first is at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Soon, there will also be an installation at Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, according to the firm.

In addition, construction is underway at another Mevion installation site, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. Installations are also moving forward at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ; University Hospitals' Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland; and University of Florida Health Cancer Center in Orlando, FL, the company said.
