Sumitomo Heavy Industries of Tokyo, Japan, is developing a superconducting cyclotron for proton therapy.

The cyclotron generates a beam of 1,000 nA, the highest level for such a system, according to Sumitomo. The cyclotron shortens irradiation time and reduces power consumption by 40%, which the company hopes will further the widespread use of proton therapy.
