Ultrasound and miniPACS provider Acuson has begun production shipments of its KinetDx PACS software to echocardiography laboratories in North America. Deliveries to radiology customers began in the fourth quarter of 1999.
KinetDx brings a number of new capabilities that are improvements over the Mountain View, CA-based vendor’s previous Aegis offering. KinetDx can serve as a hospital-wide, dedicated echocardiography and ultrasound image management system, with full, digital dynamic clip and final reporting capabilities, according to Acuson.
Acuson’s dynamic array processor allows up to 18 dynamic clips to be displayed simultaneously on dual monitors. An average adult echo exam of 50 MB opens in approximately three to five seconds, according to the vendor.
KinetDx is based on the Windows NT operating system and TCP/IP; it also offers improved DICOM network connectivity. These enhancements allow customers to integrate patient information from throughout the enterprise, including multimodality PACS and HIS/RIS/CIS, according to the company.
KinetDx also works with any ultrasound system, even if it’s not DICOM-compatible, according to the firm. Acuson has successfully completed initial DICOM network integration with the Agilent Sonos 5500, ATL HDI 5000, and Siemens Elegra ultrasound scanners.
Clinical evaluation of KinetDx was performed at Pennsylvania Cardiology Associates in Philadelphia, Riley Hospital for Children and Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor.
