Butterfly releases AI-based gestational age POCUS app

Butterfly Network has incorporated an AI-powered gestational age calculator in its point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) app. The calculator is now being used by clinicians in Malawi and Uganda.

The tool was developed by the University of North Carolina and supported by the Gate Foundation. It produces an estimate of gestational age through a blind-sweep scan that does not require image interpretation or provider training -- allowing it to be used by an expanded set of users, such as midwives, according to the firm.

Butterfly Network's gestational age tool is not yet available in the U.S. The firm has submitted a clearance request to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
