Overread.com to market second-opinion service

CHICAGO - A new company called Overread.com debuted at this week's RSNA meeting to market a service that enables point-of-care physicians to get second opinions from radiologists. The Pleasanton, CA, company plans to use Internet technology to deliver radiology expertise directly into the offices of physicians.

Overread.com was formed to capitalize upon the proliferating adoption of ultrasound technology by point-of-care physicians such as general practitioners. These clinicians often could use the assistance of a radiologist in interpreting exams, according to the company.

Overread.com plans to sell the technology that enables radiologists and clinicians to interact. The company's Point of Diagnosis image viewing stations are designed for radiologists and consist of Pentium PCs configured with DICOM 3.0-compliant viewing and reading software developed by the company. Radiologists will pay a monthly subscription fee and $2 per exam to Overread.com.

Point-of-care physicians can purchase Overread.com's POC Internet appliance, which enables them to take images from any ultrasound system or imaging device with NTSC video output and send them to a radiologist with a POD computer for overread. Overread.com plans to have the service available in the first quarter of 2000, the company said.
