Longport receives research grant

Portable ultrasound developer Longport said it has received a $500,000 grant in partnership with Lackawanna College in Scranton, PA, from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The funds, part of the state's portion of the tobacco settlement award, will be used to develop ultrasound equipment and techniques for real-time assessment of the skin and the first 10 centimeters of soft tissue, according to the Swarthmore, PA-based company.

Longport believes that this capability will allow for imaging of breast tumors. Although the project is initially directed at cancer imaging, Longport said that this imaging concept could also be applied to other applications, such as sports medicine.
