The world ultrasound market grew 3% last year, to a total of $3 billion in annual revenues, according to a report released by ultrasound consulting firm Klein Biomedical Consultants of New York City.
Philips Medical Systems snared the top spot in the global market as measured by revenue thanks to its acquisitions of Agilent Healthcare Solutions Group in 2001 and ATL Ultrasound in 1998. The company recorded worldwide ultrasound revenues of $1.02 billion in 2001.
Philips held the number two spot in the U.S. last year, with the top position occupied by the ultrasound division of Siemens Medical Solutions of Mountain View, CA, according to the Klein report.
