Dear Ultrasound Insider,
Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) can yield diagnostic accuracy comparable to CT and MRI exams, and may yield cost-savings in experienced hands, according to recent European research.
In our Ultrasound Insider Exclusive this month, contributing writer N. Shivapriya reports on two presentations from the 2004 RSNA meeting. Researchers from General Hospital in Busto Arsizio, Italy, found that CEUS, when performed as the second phase of an ultrasound exam for characterizing focal liver lesions, was accurate enough to avoid CT or MRI in most cases.
In another talk, a team from the University of Glasgow in Scotland found potential cost-savings compared with standard ultrasound, depending on the experience and specialty of the reader.
