Philips to lead DARPA ultrasound technology project

Philips Medical Systems of Andover, MA, will join its corporate counterpart Philips Research in phase one of a planned four-year Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) medical technology project to reduce the number of battlefield deaths from internal bleeding.

The technology will take the form of an ultrasound-based cuff device. The application may be extended to prevent blood-loss related civilian deaths caused by accidents and serious injury.

The collaboration includes Philips Applied Technologies and the University of Washington's Applied Physics Laboratory in Seattle.
