The preliminary results of the ACRIN 6666 trial showed an increased breast cancer detection rate from ultrasound, albeit with the risk of a higher false-positive rate. As those data analysis efforts continue, other researchers continue to seek enhancements to breast ultrasound, including examining the prospective role of 3D and computer-aided technologies.
In one study presented at last month's RSNA meeting in Chicago, researchers found that 3D automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) helped identify and localize breast lesions missed by conventional technologies. In another paper, a team from the University of California, San Diego discussed its experience with an experimental ultrasound computer-aided breast imaging system.
