Philips inks ultrasound gene therapy research deal

Philips Healthcare sister company Philips Research has signed a joint research agreement with gene therapy developer GlyGenix Therapeutics.

The collaboration will explore the feasibility of using ultrasound techniques for gene therapy, focusing in particular on the treatment of glycogen storage disease type 1a (GSD-1a) in preclinical studies. The deal will bring together Philips' medical imaging technologies with GlyGenix's experience in correcting the genetic defect of GSD-1a, according to Philips parent Royal Philips Electronics in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Preclinical studies to evaluate ultrasound-mediated plasmid DNA (pDNA) delivery will be carried out by Philips Research and Woodbridge, CT-based GlyGenix in collaboration with Duke University School of Medicine's division of medical genetics in Durham, NC.
