Compact-ultrasound developer SonoSite of Bothell, WA, has inked an agreement to purchase privately held ultrahigh-frequency microultrasound technology developer VisualSonics of Toronto.
The transaction price is approximately $71 million in cash and debt, SonoSite said.
VisualSonics' microultrasound technology uses five times the center-frequency range currently used in conventional ultrasound systems (40 MHz versus 8 MHz) and allows users to discern features as small as 40 microns (versus conventional ultrasound, which visualizes at 200 microns), according to SonoSite.
SonoSite expects to benefit from VisualSonics' position in the preclinical market, which is valued at an estimated $350 million and is expected to grow at a double-digit annualized rate, SonoSite said.
