Fla. governor vetoes ultrasound abortion bill

Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida has vetoed a bill that would have mandated an ultrasound exam for women desiring a first-trimester abortion.

In announcing the veto, Crist said that the bill "places an inappropriate burden on women seeking to terminate the pregnancy." He added that "personal views should not result in laws that unwisely expand the role of government and coerce people to obtain medical tests or procedures that are not medically necessary. In this case, such action would violate a woman's right to privacy."

The bill would have required women to undergo the ultrasound exam and pay for it. Women would also be required to view the ultrasound image or have a doctor describe it to them unless they could prove they were a victim of rape, incest, or domestic violence.
