Aetna sues NJ doctor over $59,490 echo charge

Insurance company Aetna is suing six New Jersey doctors over excessive medical charges, including a cardiologist who billed the firm nearly $60,000 for an echocardiography study, according to an article in Bloomberg.

According to the article, Jersey City Medical Center cardiologist Dr. Benyamin Hannallah charged $59,490 for an echocardiography exam in April 2010 and was paid $47,592. The amount he requested for echocardiography studies also quadrupled between 2009 and 2010, according to Bloomberg.

Filed in New Jersey Superior Court in Camden, NJ, over the past eight months, the Aetna suits allege the defendants violated New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners rules against excessive fees, according to Bloomberg. Aetna is seeking triple damages under state insurance fraud laws.
