Sonography community begins revising standards

Sixteen organizations gathered in Dallas on May 18 and 19 to begin the revision process for the sonography profession's Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards.

The sonography scope and standards were last revised by five sonography professional organizations in 2000. The membership of the current Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards Revision Task Force now includes sonography professional associations, the national sonography credentialing organizations, the sonography education accreditation bodies, and a number of physician stakeholder groups, according to a release from the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (SDMS).

The task force is chaired by Jean Lea Spitz, who is also serving as the facilitator for the group. The task force expects to complete the project in 12 to 18 months, during which time the task force members will provide input, make revisions, and communicate with their respective boards and/or members.

The task force is made up of representatives from the American College of Radiology, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, the American Society of Echocardiography, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, the Canadian Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, Cardiovascular Credentialing International, the Joint Review Committee on Education in Cardiovascular Technology, the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Society for Vascular Ultrasound, SDMS, the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound.
