Ill. woman sues over transvaginal ultrasound

An Illinois woman is suing a hospital in Libertyville, IL, alleging medical battery from an hour-long transvaginal ultrasound procedure.

According to an article by the Courthouse News Service, Marianne Keith and her husband filed a lawsuit against Advocate Condell Medical Center in Cook County Court, claiming that a sonographer "repeatedly jammed the probe" into her cervix during an ultrasound procedure. The ultrasound exam was recommended when she was referred to the institution with flulike symptoms, including abdominal pain, dizziness, and vomiting, according to the article.

Keith claims that she did not consent to the ultrasound in the way it was performed. Having received multiple ultrasounds previously, she had only "consented that the ultrasound be performed in a manner comparable to ultrasounds she had previously undergone," the Courthouse News Service reported.

She said she suffered painful injuries to her vagina and cervix, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder, recurrent nightmares, and other forms of emotional distress. She is seeking damages for medical battery, while her husband is seeking damages for loss of consortium, according to the article.
