AuntMinnie.com Ultrasound Insider

Dear Ultrasound Insider,

Ultrasound isn't just for diagnosis, of course. The technology has therapeutic benefit in a variety of applications, and researchers are exploring its utility as an adjunct to tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) therapy in stroke treatment.

A team from the University of Texas Health Science Center and the University of Alabama at Birmingham found that the combination of a novel, operator-independent ultrasound therapy device and tPA may increase the rate of artery recanalization in patients with ischemic stroke.

Our coverage of the research is the subject of this issue's Insider Exclusive, which you can access before our regular members.

Earlier this month, a multispecialty panel convened by the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound recommended a number of changes to ultrasound criteria used to determine if a first-trimester pregnancy cannot result in a live-born baby. These recommendations, which were developed to lower the risk of incorrectly diagnosing a pregnancy as nonviable, include new standards based on the size of an embryo without a heartbeat and the size of a gestational sac without an embryo. Cardiac sonographer Doug Wuebben has penned another article for AuntMinnie.com. In his latest contribution, Wuebben discusses how sonographers can make a difference just by following the mantra of "help this person." What does he mean by that? Click here to find out.

In a study published recently in Lancet, the combination of ultrasound and x-ray venography showed that cerebrospinal venous narrowing is unrelated to multiple sclerosis (MS), contradicting prior research.
