Medical group issues position paper on interventional US

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) has released a position statement on interventional ultrasound.

The paper critically reviews the literature and evaluates the accuracy, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of ultrasound-guided injections in joints and soft tissues, which are commonly performed in sports medicine, according to the society. The paper also discusses new procedures and future trends.

Ultrasound exams can be performed relatively quickly, provide accurate diagnoses, and reduce the use of additional exams later on, AMSSM said. Moreover, ultrasound enables physicians to identify problems that were previously undetectable, as well as perform new and advanced procedures. Ultrasound scanners have also become smaller and more portable, allowing physicians to perform point-of-care imaging.

The position paper is available on AMSSM's website.
