Canadian keepsake ultrasound provider UC Baby has discontinued its on-demand prenatal video service for customers after an investigation by CBC News found it was easy to access ultrasound scans conducted at any of its 27 clinics across the country.
UC Baby had provided customers with access to their keepsake ultrasounds on its server as part of a $175 package. After receiving a tip from a viewer, CBC News said that it uncovered a vulnerability that enabled access to all ultrasound scans on the server, as well as access to the patients' family name, their city or town, and the date of the ultrasound.
The office of Nova Scotia's privacy commissioner notified UC Baby of the security breach on March 10, but the firm continued to post ultrasound exams on its server until March 16, CBC News reported. The owner of the company then told the news station that UC Baby would immediately stop the video on-demand service.
