Indian radiologist arrested for conducting sex ID test

Well-known Indian radiologist Dr. V.K. Mutreja -- an honorary secretary of the Delhi Medical Association -- was arrested on Saturday along with five others for allegedly conducting fetal sex-determination tests, according to an article from The Hindu.

Mutreja has allegedly been conducting illegal ultrasound tests for fetal sex determination for years, primarily for clients in neighboring Haryana where the sex ratio is skewed, the article noted.

"A decoy pregnant lady brought by the Haryana team and another lady who came there on her volition underwent [a] sex-determination test, violating preconception and prenatal diagnostic test (PCPNDT) law and leading to the arrests," said a statement issued by District Magistrate (South-West) Madhu Teotia and cited by The Hindu.

Officials suspect that Mutreja could be part of a larger racket involving other doctors, according to the article.

All of this comes on the heels of a strike due to the same law that led to Mutreja's arrest. Radiologists in the Maharashtra state have gone on strike in support of a radiologist they said was falsely accused of performing sex-determination tests.
